Bold, beautiful,
Rio Grande style tapestry rugs are handwoven amidst
a riot of yarns on a loom the size of a garden shed.
Not every rug requires every inch of the loom’s
giant dimensions but its heft delivers perfect tension
and obediently flat rugs. These richly colorful, heirloom
tapestries combine skilled craftsmanship, wry wit and
a devilishly artful eye.
The human eye distinguishes about fifty zillion different
hue and value nuances in any ‘natural’ color.
Dyeing my own raw materials has never been an option;
I’ve always loved doing it. After 15 years hand-dyeing
and composing the natural fiber palette, these limited
edition rugs are complex, vibrant, and sophisticated.
I'm currently exploring the double warp overlay technique,
producing two distinct tapestry surfaces simultaneously.
A lifelong artist, my inspiration comes from a wide
collection of paintings,
sculptures and photographs. A new home and studio are
under construction on our 70-acre ranch outside of Fredericksburg,
near Austin, Texas.
Commissions are developed in my studio
with Harley a 15-year-old Dachshund and my talented,
sculptor husband, Michael Payne.
